The Rainbow Bridge

This morning I got up to say good morning to my dog Renzo like I always do, when I noticed something was wrong. He had trouble breathing, didn't want to eat or drink anything, and he could hardly walk. I somehow managed to feed him his epilepsy medication, and that's when I saw his gums were all pale. I know from experience that pale gums are often seen when people have anemia, so I got a bit worried and immediately called the vet.

He really seemed very sick, which was strange, because he was fine yesterday. We played and ran together last night before we went to sleep, and he seemed to be very happy and healthy, and he didn't appear to be in pain or anything.

So after the vet examined him and took a few X-rays, he came back to tell me that Renzo's spleen had ruptured, probably when we were sleeping, and his tummy had slowly filled itself with blood. They couldn't really do anything besides doing an operation that removes the blood from his belly, and giving him a blood transfusion, but it wouldn't solve the problem; it would only slow it down. I asked the vet if there was a chance Renzo would get better if I chose the operation, but they told me the operation would only give me a bit more time with him, but he'd be in a lot of pain, and he definitely wouldn't get better.

So it was up to me to decide for my dog's life, which was one of the hardest decisions I've ever made. Renzo really helped and supported me when my older brother died 8 and half years ago, so making him suffer would be a very ungrateful and cruel thing to do, which is why I decided to put him to sleep.

It's a few hours later now, but my hands are still shaking, and I still have tears in my eyes. I am so upset about losing such an important part of my life, and I can't really believe he's dead :( But even though my heart is broken, I know it was the right decision, and that he's in a better place now.

  1. Aww, this is heartbreaking, lady. :( Losing a pet is absolutely one of the toughest things you'll ever do- they become part of your family + heart. Sending you lots of love as you grieve for Renzo- he was such a handsome boy!

  2. I know the feeling, I had a dog, Tarri, and I put her down. The last of her 16 years was end. I hope the best for Renzo, you are a treasure.

  4. ((((HUGS)))))Oh sorry to hear this sad news about Renzo:( Losing a loved pet is hard, but you made the right decision. It would have been harder to see him suffer:'(

  10. Omg I am SO sorry to hear this!!! Thinking of you with your loss.

  11. I had to do the same with my dog last year. I still have nightmares from it. They mostly give her the needle in the dream and it doesn't work and it's really weird after that.

  12. Oh gosh, I'm so sorry to hear about Renzo (such a handsome dog!) - that's heartbreaking. You definitely made the right decision, to prevent him from suffering. Be sure to look after yourself this week Sharon! x

  13. This is so so sad, I feel for you, I had to make the same decision about one of my beloved dogs 3 years ago and it still hurts so bad, I know it'll feel really hard but you need to let yourself heal and grieve. You did right by your lovely man there, be proud you had the strength to do it xxx

  16. aw sharon, i am so sorry.
that must have been so hard but i think you made the right decision. we know he's in a better place now.
my pet also died this past week. we buried him in our backyard and so he'll still be with us. <3

    sending much love to you.......

  17. I am so sorry for your loss. Pets are very much a part of the family and it's devastating to lose them. I lost my cat Mika a couple of years ago and still miss him now (as does my nephew). It's been touch and go a few times with my cat Leo this past year, but he's tough as old boots :)

  18. I'm so sorry to hear this. He was a beautiful dog, and it sounds like a fantastic companion. You gave him the best life he could have ever asked for, and you didn't make him suffer just for your own sake. That's very noble. Any dog would be truly lucky to have an awesome owner like you. :)

  19. Oh Sharon, I am so sorry to hear this. I had to make the same decision for my dog two years ago and it was so difficult. But, I know that it was the right decision as, like Renzo, she was suffering so much with no potential to recover. I know it's devastating now, but you definitely did the right thing. Sending much love,
    Julia x
